• In what format would you most likely use the persuasive style of writing?
  • o An Editorial - The persuasive style of writing is appropriate whenever you take a position on an issue.

• What would make a good first sentence for a persuasive essay?
  • o In a good first sentence the author intends to convince readers about a topic. The author should not try to explain why or describe.

• What makes a strong password? Give examples…
  • o The strongest passwords are at least six to eight characters long and include at least one lowercase letter, uppercase letter, number, and symbol.

• What kind of software program can make copies of itself and damages your computer even if you do not do anything?
  • o Worms make copies of themselves, often across a network, without being triggered by an event such as opening an unknown attachment or installing unknown software. It is not spyware, which, secretly collects personal information from your computer. It is NOT a Virus. Viruses make copies of themselves, but they cannot do any damage unless triggered by an event such as opening an unknown attachment or installing unknown software.

• What is the most secure way to give out personal information on the Internet?
  • o Web sites with https:// in their addresses are the most secure protocol for sending information over the Web. No trustworthy person or organization would ask you to send personal information in e-mail because it is not secure. Pop-up messages are not secure and they are often deceptive.

• What are the different characteristics of an argument?
  • o Arguments should be based on Objective information used in a logical manner. Arguments that are one-sided usually have subjective feelings and are based on the author’s emotion.

• What are the different persuasive strategies?
  • o Emotion - Words that describe personal feelings shared by all people indicate an argument based on emotion
  • o Ethics - Words that appeal to an audience’s sense of right and wrong indicate an argument based on ethics
  • o Reason - Words like values, justice, and could be used with objective information.

• What is the most important characteristic of a good issue choice for a persuasive essay?
  • o You can make a convincing argument using one or more persuasive strategies. If you cannot make a convincing argument using strategies for persuasive writing, then another writing style would be more appropriate.
  • o Choosing a controversial issue and asking the right questions about the issue helps you to make sure that your persuasive essay will be effective.

• What should you avoid when defining an issue for a persuasive essay?
  • o Offending your audience - A good issue for a persuasive essay is controversial but not offensive.

• What are the different types of effective questions you should ask to get to get the answers you need for a persuasive essay?
  • o Fact: Have a factual answer
    • § What is the United Nations? Who makes up the UN?, When was it founded?
• o Convergent (Why): Moving toward one direction or having a limited number of answers.
  • § How does the UN differ from the League of Nations? What makes the UN a democratic organization? Explain how the UN functions in the world today?
• o Divergent (Idea): Moving in many directions or having many answers.
  • § Predict what would happen if the United States left the UN? How might the United Nations be improved? How would International problems be solved if the United Nations did not exist?
• o Evaluative (Opinion): Requiring judgment to decide among various opinions or answers.
  • § Compare and contrast the UN and the League of Nations. Why should we care about problems that happen half way around the world? How successful has the UN been thus far?

• What is a good way to get fewer hits by excluding information that is not relevant from your searches?
  • o Use NOT or a minus sign (-) - When you get hits that are not relevant, find a keyword that the irrelevant hits have in common. Then, use NOT or a minus sign with that keyword to exclude the irrelevant hits from your search.

• What is plagiarism?
  • o Putting information in your own words and turning it in as your own without citing your sources. When you paraphrase, quote or summarize a source you MUST CITE your sources and give credit to the author/owner.

• Why is it important to paraphrase a source as you take notes?
  • o To help ensure that you do not accidentally plagiarize the source. You may forget that you did not completely paraphrase the source when you begin writing.

• What does HTML stand for?
  • o HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. Hypertextmeans "text with links in it."

• What is HTML used for?
  • o HTML is the Structure or the skeleton of a webpage

• What are these symbols called < >, and how are they used?
  • o These symbols are the greater than and less than signs or carrot symbols. These symbols are TAGS in HTML coding.
  • o <tags> - all HTML documents are writtin using tags. All tags must have a open <> and a Close </>

• Which elements of HTML are required in all documents?
  • o <HTML> - written as <!DOCTYPE html>, this tells the page that it is in HTML format.
